Assessments: *How do I deal with messages I get when trying to edit or remove questions?

ANSWER:

Assessments: Common Messages

Message: Because this assessment has Student submissions, you cannot add questions.

Message: Because this assessment has Student submissions, you cannot remove questions.

Options: When there are submissions for an assessment, Designers cannot add additional questions, rearrange questions, or delete questions for that assessment.

  • Designers can make changes to existing questions for quizzes that have submissions.  But depending on how the question is saved, and what changes are made, grades could be affected.

  • If it is necessary to add, rearrange, or delete questions for a quiz that already has submissions, to preserve those submissions, create a new quiz based on that quiz.

  • If it is a viable option, Instructors can reset all the submissions for that quiz. In the Assessment Manager, check the box to the left of the Name column, which selects all names (submissions). Then click the Reset Entire Submission button.

Message: This question is used by one or more assessments. Clicking OK will overwrite the original question and could change student grades. To avoid regrading student submissions, cancel this error message and, from the Question Editor screen, click Save as New.

Options: If the change is cosmetic (e.g., question wording), go ahead and click OK to change the original question. If Designers make changes to points or answer choices for quizzes that have submissions, and click OK on this message, current submissions are flagged as outdated, as indicated in the Assessment Manager by this symbol:.  Instructors would regrade those submissions all at once via theUpdate Outdated Attempts option.
