Assessments: How do I make a quiz, survey, or self-test available to specific students but not the whole class?

ANSWER:

Assessments: Set Release Criteria

Setting release criteria allows you to selectively release an assessment:

  • on a certain date.
  • to certain individuals.
  • to students belonging to a certain group.
  • according to a variety of criteria in the Grade Book.

It is not necessary to set release criteria to choose ALL students, because by default everyone in the class has access once you make the quiz available. Instead, use this feature to limit the quiz to specific members or groups in your course.

For example, you issued a quiz to the whole class with a time limit of 50 minutes.  But 2 students with disabilities could not complete the quiz in that timeframe.  Therefore, you can re-issue this quiz to just those 2 students by clicking the Add Member Criteria button on the Set Release Criteria page.  This prevents you from having to open up the quiz again to the whole class to accommodate an individual or two.

Role(s) Needed: The instructions for setting release criteria apply to Section-level Designers and Instructors

Step 1: From the Build or Teach tab, click the  Assessments tool in the Course Tools area of the Course Menu.

Step 2: Click the down arrow icon next to the assessment name and select Set Release Criteria.

Step 3: Click the Add Member Criteria button.

Step 4: Check the students who should see the quiz and click Save.

TIP: If you do not see an item, click the Paging Preference icon in the bottom right. The default number of items shown per page is 10. In the Edit Paging window, enter a larger value (the maximum is 999 items per page):

This allows you to see all items in a single view so you can scroll up and down to find what you need. If you have more than 999 items, you will need to navigate from one page to another using the Page controls.

Here is an example of releasing an item to a single individual in the course.  In this case, Quiz 1 will only be accessible to "student1":

Step 5: Click Save on the Set Release Criteria page.

The item will now show (Conditional) by it.

Though powerful, Set Release Criteria is a misunderstood function in the context of an assessment. Ignore the Date criteria.  Instead, use the date/time settings via   Edit Properties

Step 6: If it isn't already, make sure the assessment is available so that when your criteria is met, the target students will have access.

To make it available, click the down arrow  icon next to the assessment name and select  Show Item.
