Assignments: How do I add an assignment that is connected to the Grade Book?
ANSWER: CREATE ASSIGNMENTS
The Assignments tool allows you to create coursework and manage the grades and feedback. Like Assessments, Assignments are integrated with the Grade Book. Assignments allow you to list the possible points and attach files, such as a sample paper and format to guide students.
Role(s) Needed: The instructions for creating assignments apply to Section-level Designers.
Step 1: From the Build tab, click the Assignments tool.
Step 2: Click the Create Assignment button.
Step 3: On the Create Assignment screen, enter a Title and optional Description.
NOTE: The assignment is NOT available to students until you have assigned it to students or groups under the Assignment Recipients section.
-
Decide on the type of assignment:
- Text with attachments: A Text with attachments assignment requires Students to submit their assignment by entering text in the Assignments tool or by attaching files.
- Web site: A Web site assignment requires Students to submit a ZIP file containing linked HTML files that create a Web site. Students specify an entry point for their Web site and use relative links to link all pages.
-
Decide whether to assign to recipients now or later, in which case it will not be visible until you select one of the following options:
-
All Students individually: Send the assignment to individual Students who work independently and submit their own assignment. Students receive their own grade. You can send the assignment to individual Students but place them into groups and provide different instructions for each group. Students work independently and submit their own assignment. Students receive their own grade. In this case:
- Select Create additional sets of instructions for groups of Students.
- Click Select Groups. The Select Learning Groups pop-up window appears:
- Select the groups that you want to send the assignment to and click Continue. The Additional Instructions pop-up window appears.
- In the Additional Instructions text box for each group, enter the instructions. If you want to attach a file, click Browse. The Content Browser pop-up window appears. For more information, click Help in the pop-up window.
- Click Save.
-
Groups of Students: Send an assignment to groups of Students who work collaboratively and submit one assignment per group. Students in the same group receive the same grade. In this case:
- Click Select Groups. The Select Learning Groups pop-up window appears:
- Select the groups that you want to send the assignment to.
- If you have additional instructions for each group, do the following:
- Select Provide groups with additional instructions and click Save. The Additional Instructions pop-up window appears.
- In the Additional Instructions text box for each group, enter the instructions. If you want to attach a file, click Browse. The Content Browser pop-up window appears. For more information, click Help in the pop-up window.
- Click Save.
- NOTE: If you have access to the Teach tab, you can use the Group Manager tool to create groups and place Students into the groups. If you do not have access to the Group Manager tool, you can still select the option to send an assignment to groups, but the assignment is NOT sent until Students are placed into groups.
-
All Students individually: Send the assignment to individual Students who work independently and submit their own assignment. Students receive their own grade. You can send the assignment to individual Students but place them into groups and provide different instructions for each group. Students work independently and submit their own assignment. Students receive their own grade. In this case:
- Set Due Date (submissions after this date are marked late) and optionally a later Cutoff Date (can no longer submit after this date; if don't submit by this date, assignment is marked missed).
-
Decide whether or not to activate Grading features.Optionally enter a different name for the Grade Book column to be associated with this assignment; otherwise the Title will also be used as the Grade Book column. TIP: The shorter the Grade Book column name, the better.
- If the assignment is to be graded, then Check Release grade to Students in My Grades if you want the grade and comments you return to students to be visible to them.
-
Decide whether to use a Numeric grade, Alphanumeric grade, or Grading Form to use as basis for scoring your students. A Grading Form is akin to a grading rubric, which provides a more granular way of grading Students' work by identifying specific criteria and levels of performance against the criteria. Grading Forms are created via the Grading Forms tool.
- IMPORTANT: If you do not specify a grading scheme, the assignment becomes Not gradable by default. After you save the assignment, you may not be able to change the grading scheme.
- Specify if you want to associate Goals that students should achieve as a result of completing this assignment. Goals are created via the Goals tool.
-
Click the Expand icon next to More Options:
- Under Taking Back Submissions, if you want to allow Students to take back submitted assignments and revise them before the due date, select this option.
-
TIPS:
- Consider allowing Students to take back submissions, especially if the assignment is group work. If someone in a group inadvertently submits the assignment before it is complete, the group can re-submit the assignment.
- Students are not allowed to create and submit different versions. Only their latest submission is recorded.
- Under Publishing Submissions, select whether you want to allow only the Instructor or both Instructor and Students to publish submissions. Publishing submissions allows all course members to view submitted assignments.
- Under Section Instructor Notification, select whether or not you want the Instructor to receive e-mails when Students submit assignments.
Step 4: Click Save to save your assignment settings.
