Assignments: How do I make an assignment available?

ANSWER: SEND ASSIGNMENTS

It is possible to create an assignment but not send it to Students immediately. When the assignment is ready, you can send it to Students then. If you keep the assignment in the Assignments tool, Students can view, complete, and submit it from the Inbox tab in Assignments. If you place a link to the assignment from the Course Content tool, Students can view, complete, and submit it from there.

Role(s) Needed: The instructions for making an assignment available apply to Section-level Instructors and Designers.

Step 1: From the Build or Teach tab, click the  Assignments tool.

Step 2: Click the down arrow  icon next to the assignment name and select  Edit Properties.

The assignment will NOT be visible to students until you choose the recipients.

Step 3: Decide whether to send the assignment to individual students or groups:

  • All Students individually: Send the assignment to individual Students who work independently and submit their own assignment. Students receive their own grade. You can send the assignment to individual Students but place them into groups and provide different instructions for each group. Students work independently and submit their own assignment. Students receive their own grade. In this case:
    1. Select Create additional sets of instructions for groups of Students.
    2. Click Select Groups. The Select Learning Groups pop-up window appears:
    3. Select the groups that you want to send the assignment to and click Continue. The Additional Instructions pop-up window appears.
    4. In the Additional Instructions text box for each group, enter the instructions. If you want to attach a file, click Browse. The Content Browser pop-up window appears. For more information, click Help in the pop-up window.
    5. Click Save.

  • Groups of Students: Send an assignment to groups of Students who work collaboratively and submit one assignment per group. Students in the same group receive the same grade. In this case:
    1. Click Select Groups. The Select Learning Groups pop-up window appears:
    2. Select the groups that you want to send the assignment to.
    3. If you have additional instructions for each group, do the following:
    4. Select Provide groups with additional instructions and click Save. The Additional Instructions pop-up window appears.
    5. In the Additional Instructions text box for each group, enter the instructions. If you want to attach a file, click Browse. The Content Browser pop-up window appears. For more information, click Help in the pop-up window.
    6. Click Save.

NOTE: If you have access to the Teach tab, you can use the Group Manager tool to create groups and place Students into the groups. If you do not have access to the Group Manager tool, you can still select the option to send an assignment to groups, but the assignment is NOT sent until Students are placed into groups.

Step 4: Click Save to save your assignment settings.

If the assignment has already been sent to recipients but is still not visible, on the Assignments page click the down arrow  icon next to the assignment name and select  Show Item. All appearances of this item have now been made visible to Students. Likewise, to make an assessment unavailable, select the  Hide Item option.
