Chat: How do I use Chat?

ANSWER:

Chat: Using It

  1. Click on the Chat link. This may be found on the homepage, in the course menu, or on an organizer page.
  2. Click on the name of the chat room that you want to enter. The Chat Room screen is displayed.

The right-hand frame displays a list of users that are logged on. The left- hand frame contains the Output Interaction Box. This is the frame in which all the messages appear. At the bottom of the screen is an Input Box where messages are typed in.

Beneath the right-hand frame is a check box with Entry Chime next to it. If you click on the check box, every time a message is sent a chime will sound - provided that you have a speaker connected to your PC.

Sending a public message

  1. Type your message in the text box below the words "Enter your message below".
  2. Press Enter to send the message. Everyone in the chat room can now view the message.

Sending a private message

A private message can also be sent to someone in the chat room:

  1. Click on a name from the list of users logged on, found to the right of the Output Interaction Box, to send a private message. The selected name will become highlighted.
  2. Type your message in the text box below the words "Enter your message below".
  3. Press Enter to send the message. The message will only appear to the person (in the chat room) that you selected in step 1.

Sending a web site address (URL)

It is also possible to open a URL in a new browser window while in the Chat Room. To do this:

  1. Click on the Send URL button while in a chat room. A WebCT Chat Sending URL screen displays.
  2. Enter a URL (Web Site Address) in the Enter URL: text box. E.g. http://www.google.com
  3. Click on the Send button to send the URL. Clicking on the Close button will close the window without sending the URL.
  4. Click on the Okay button. The screen will redisplay the chat room while opening a new browser window in the background for the web site.

Leaving the chat room

Click on the Quit button at the bottom of the chat window. It is good chat-room etiquette to announce that you will be leaving before you press Quit.
