Discussions: How do I prevent ALL students from posting to a topic any longer?

ANSWER:

Discussions: Edit Properties > Lock this topic

You can lock down a Topic completely so that users cannot post new messages or reply to existing messages. Users will still be able to view the messages. For example, you want to prevent new postings because the assignment associated with it is complete, and you don't want to continue checking for new messages in case students post to the old topic by mistake.

TIPS:

  • Instructors can still post within a Locked topic.

  • If it is not feasible to lock an entire Topic, you can lock individual message threads within that topic if necessary. Open the first message in the thread and click the Lock Message button.

Role(s) Needed: These instructions apply to Instructors and Designers.

Step 1: From the Build or Teach tab, click the Discussions tool.

Step 2: Click the down arrow icon next to the topic name and select Edit Properties.

Step 3: Click on the Topic Behavior Options link.

Step 4: Check the option topic for Students (Section Instructions can post in a locked topic).

Step 5: Click Save.

A padlock icon appears next to the topic title on the Discussions screen and the messages screen.
