File Manager: *Getting or Uploading Files

Getting Files

You can get files from locations within the online course system or from your computer and add them to your current location in File Manager. If you are getting files from a file-sharing location, such as Repository or Template Manager, you can either copy the files or create subscriptions to the files.

Step 1: In File Manager, navigate to the location to which you want to add files.

Step 2: Click Get Files.

Step 3: In the Content Browser window, do one of the following:

  • If the file(s) you want to get is on your computer:

    • Click the My Computer icon. Your computer's file browser appears.

TIP: You can select multiple files to upload at once. As long as the files are in the same folder, hold down the Ctrl key as you select each file. A status bar will show the progress of the files being uploaded. If the My Computer icon does not appear, you need to get Java.  Another option is to create a Web folder reference to your My Files area so that you can drag and drop files from your computer.  Reference the articles on Java and WebDAV in this knowledge base for further details.

    • Locate and select the files. Each file is copied to the File Manager folder from which you clicked Get Files.

  • If the files you want to get are already in the online course system:

    • Navigate to the location of the files you want to get.

    • Next to the title of each file that you want to get, select the check box, and click OK.

    • If you have selected files that reside in either Repository or Template Manager, a new Content Browser pop-up window appears. Select a subscription option:
      • To create subscriptions to all files, click Subscribe to all Files and then click OK.

      • To create subscriptions to some files and copy other files, under What do you want to do?, individually select Subscribe or Copy for each file and then click OK.

    • If the destination folder contains files with the same name as the files or file subscriptions you are creating, the Resolve Naming Conflicts screen appears.

For each naming conflict, do one of the following:

      • To select a new destination folder, from the Select another location drop-down list, select a folder. NOTE: Only the original destination folder and sub-folders of the original destination folder are available for selection.

      • To create a destination folder:
        • Click Create Folder. The Create Folder pop-up window appears.
        • In the Title text box, enter the name for the folder. The folder name can include multiple words and spaces
        • Click OK. The folder is created and appears in the Select another location text box.

      • To rename the file or file subscription, select Rename and in the text box, enter a new file name.

      • To replace the file in the destination folder with the file or file subscription you are creating, select Replace existing.

    • Click OK.

The File Manager screen appears and the files and/or file subscriptions appear in the list of files.

NOTE: File subscriptions are identified by the Subscribed to a remote file icon that appears next to the file's ActionLinks icon.
