Grade Book: How do I view statistics for gradable columns?

ANSWER:

Grade Book: Column Statistics

You can view the following statistics for calculated, numeric, and alphanumeric columns from the Grades, Members, View All, or Custom View tab. NOTE: Only numeric-based column values are used in statistics.

  • Count: the total number of values in the column.
  • Average: the average value of all values in the column.
  • Median: the middle value in a distribution of column values.
  • Maximum: the maximum column value.
  • Minimum: the minimum column value.
  • Standard Deviation: the measure of the dispersion or variation in a distribution of column values.

Role(s) Needed: These instructions apply to Instructors and Teaching Assistants (if TAs are permitted to use the Grade Book).

Step 1: From a Grade Book tab screen, locate the column for which to view statistics.

Step 2: Click the down arrow next to the column name and select Column Statistics

Step 3: In the Column Statistics pop-up window.

A Grade Histogram, which is a bar graph of the number of Students who scored within certain grade ranges, is shown. The measurement for the number of Students is broken down into decimals to represent how often (the Frequency) grades fell within a certain grade range. The bottom bar represents the highest grade.

To increase the number of grade ranges, click More Bars. Five bars are added, decreasing the grade ranges.

To decrease the number of grade ranges, click Fewer Bars. Five bars are removed, increasing the grade ranges.

NOTE: To calculate the grade ranges, the system uses the maximum grade allowed for the column and divides the value into 10 even ranges. If a maximum allowable grade has not been set for a column, the system uses the highest grade in the column. For example, if the maximum grade allowed for a column is 100, or the highest grade is 100, you see 10 ranges each with an increment of 10.

Step 4: Click OK to close the stats window.
