Java: Sun Java Runtime Environment Errors
ISSUE:
Some users have reported problems using the online course system with Microsoft Windows and some versions of the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
Possible causes include using an incompatible version of the Sun JRE or having multiple versions of Sun JREs installed.
RESOLUTION:
Some users have found that their problems are resolved after uninstalling all versions of Sun JRE from their computers, and then installing one version.
- Click the Start button on the bottom left of your screen.
- From the Start menu, select Control Panel (if it is visible) or select the Settings option, and then click Control Panel from the secondary menu. A new window will appear.
- For Windows XP, double-click Add/Remove Programs; for Windows Vista/7, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
- Locate all versions of Sun Java, JRE, or JVM.
- For each Java version you find, click on it, then click Change/Remove (XP) or Uninstall (Vista/7) and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Download a compatible version of the Java plugin.
- To install the JRE, accept the license agreement and follow the online and onscreen instructions.
After installing Java, we recommend turning off the automatic checking for Java updates:
- Click the Start button on the bottom left of your screen.
- On the Start menu, select Control Panel (if it is visible) or select the Settings option, and then click Control Panel from the secondary menu. A new window will appear.
- Find and double-click the Java image (If you cannot find the Java image right away, try selecting the Classic View version of the Control Panel).
- Click the Update tab.
- Clear the checkbox next to Check for Updates Automatically.
- If you get a Java Update - Warning message, click the Never Check button.
- Click Apply.
- Click the "x" to close the Java Control Panel window.
