Respondus: Step 1 of 2 in Creating a Quiz using Respondus: Create a Word Processing Document

Creating a Quiz Using Respondus

Step 1: Create a Word Processing Document

You may create multiple choice, true and false, short answers, matching and paragraph questions in a word processing document and upload them into the online course system. Calculated questions must be created in Respondus or within the online course system's Question Database tool.

Step 1.1: Create a word processing document with your quiz questions.

  • Word or Word Perfect may be used; however, turn off any automatic formating features.
  • Word Pad or Notepad (found under Programs/Accessories) are simplier word processing programs and make it easier to follow the Respondus questions format. On a windows computer, look under Programs/Accessories to find these programs.

Step 1.2: Each question must be created in a specific format in order for Respondus to upload it into Vista. Review the following guidelines for the specific format:

Question Formatting

Create questions, answers and student feedback as in the example question below. Use the Letter Guide and Explanation Guide below for assistance. You must have use a space or tab after each colon or period.

(a) = A Title can be imported with each question. If a title is not provided for a question, the first 17 characters from the question wording will be used as the question title. Titles must be placed at the beginning of a question and begin with "Title" followed by the actual text for the title. If the title exceeds 17 characters, the remaining characters will be dropped during the import.

(b) Each question must begin with a question number, followed by a period "." The question wording must follow the question number. (Note: at least one space should be between the question number and the question wording.)

(c) General Feedback can be included but it must appear immediately after the question wording and before any of the answer choices. The line must also begin with the @ symbol, and there must be at least one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text.

(d) Correct answers should be indicated by placing an asterisk (*) directly in front of the answer choice (do not put a space between the asterisk and the answer choice).

(e) Feedback for individual answer choices can be added by placing it immediately after the related answer choice and by beginning the line with the @ symbol. There must be at least one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text.

Multiple Response:

You must indicate you are creating a multiple response question by entering the Type as MR. To create a multiple response question, follow the same formatting rules described above for multiple choice questions.

Multiple Response Question Example:

Type: MR
Title: Discoveries
4 . Which of the following individuals are credited with determining the exact speed of light?
@ The inventors and their discovery/theory may be found in Chapter 4.
a. Albert Einstein
*b. Albert Michelson
c. Thomas Edison
*d. Edward Williams Morley

Short Answer Questions:

You must indicate that you are creating a short answer question by entering the Type as S. With short answer questions you are providing all possible correct answers. Therefore, there is no asterisk (*) in front of your answer choices. General Feedback can be included but it must appear immediately after the question wording and before any of the answer choices. The line must also begin with the @ symbol, and there must be at least one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text. See the example below.

Short Answer Question Example:

Type: S
Title: One Step Equation
5 . Solve the equation 5w = 30. Write your answer in numeric form.
@ Use the inverse operation, dividing, to find w = 6.
a. 6
b. 6.0

Paragraph Questions:

You must indicate that you are creating a paragraph question by entering the Type as P. Place an asterisk (*) next to the answer. The only answer you provide is the correct answer. General Feedback can be included but it must appear immediately after the question wording and before any of the answer choices. The line must also begin with the @ symbol, and there must be at least one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text. See the example below.

Paragraph Question Example:

Type: P
Title: Define Tessellation
6 . Write the definition of a tessellation.
@ Definition can be found in 9.3.
a. A repeating pattern of congruent figures that completely covers a plane with no gaps or overlaps.

Matching Questions:

You must indicate you are creating a matching question by entering the Type as MT. General Feedback can be included but it must appear immediately after the question wording and before any of the answer choices. The line must also begin with the @ symbol, and there must be at least one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text. Matches are indicated by placing an "=" symbol between the two parts of the match. Spaces before or after the "=" symbol are optional. If you plan to list correct answers for other questions at the bottom of the document, simply skip the number for all questions that are of the matching variety.

Matching Question Example:

Type: MT
Title: Scientific discoveries
7 . Match the correct name to the discovery or theory.
@ The inventors and their discovery/theory may be found in Chapter 4.
a. Michelson-Morely = Speed of light
b. Einstein = Theory of Relativity
c. Marconi = Radio waves

Step 1.3: Save your document as a simple text (.txt) or rich text (.rtf) file.
