Web Links: How do I add links to web site resources?

ANSWER:

Create Web Link

The Create Web Link feature allows you to place links to outside websites within any folders or learning modules of a course site. Students click on the link and are taken directly to the linked website.

Role(s) Needed: The instructions for creating web links apply to Course- and Section-level Designers.

Step 1: From the Build tab, click the Web Links tool.

Step 2: Click the Create Web Link button.

Step 3: On the Create Web Link screen,

  • Enter a Title and optional Description, which is helpful to inform students as to the nature of the site and why it is important that they visit it.

  • For Item Visibility, decide whether to show this item to students (upon saving) or keep hidden until you are finished setting up all your web links in the course.

  • Enter the full address in the URL field (e.g., http://www.google.com)

  • Decide whether to force the web site to Open in a new browser window or within the course frame itself.

TIP:  There are two main reasons you might want the web site to open in a new window: copyright concerns and ease of navigation. Opening a website within the framework of another site is called framing and is frowned upon by copyright scholars. Many sites do not mind being framed. Educational institutions usually have more leeway than commercial organizations, but asking permission first is always a good idea. To be safe, choose to open the site in a new window.

Opening a website in a new window also allows users to more easily move back and forth between sites without losing their place. Another consideration is personal preference: some people like having multiple windows open on their desktop while others do not.

  • Decide whether to put the link into a category (that was previously created).

  • Specify if you want to associate goals that students should achieve as a result of viewing this link.

  • To save the web link and create another right away, click Save and Add Another and repeat the above steps. The current web link is saved.

Step 4: Click Save to create the web link.
